New Delhi: A senior US official has praised the New Delhi G20 declaration on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, stating that it is a major step forward in US President Joe Biden's efforts to push for peace in the region based on the principles of the UN Charter.
Principal Deputy National Security Advisor of the White House, Jon Finer, highlighted that the joint statement builds on previous declarations and UN resolutions to emphasize the imperative that Russia refrains from using force for territorial acquisition and abides by its obligations in the UN Charter.
He noted that the Biden administration has been focusing on countries seeking an end to the conflict and pushing for peace based on the four core principles of the UN Charter.
The declaration, signed by major economies, including Brazil, India, and South Africa, calls on Russia to uphold international law and refrain from the threat or use of force to seek territorial acquisition.
The G20 members also appreciated the efforts of Turkey and UN-brokered agreements related to food and grain transportation from Russia and Ukraine to meet the demand in developing countries.
The declaration underscores the human suffering and negative impacts of the war in Ukraine on global food and energy security, supply chains, macro-financial stability, inflation, and growth.
It emphasizes the importance of upholding international law, territorial integrity, sovereignty, international humanitarian law, and the multilateral system to safeguard peace and stability. Diplomacy, dialogue, and peaceful conflict resolution are deemed critical.
The G20 Summit in New Delhi concluded on Sunday, and the declaration reflects global efforts to address the adverse impact of the conflict on the global economy and promote a comprehensive, just, and durable peace in Ukraine.
